Winslow Homer (Febru – Septem ) was an American landscape painter and printmaker, best known for his marine subjects. He is considered one of the foremost painters in 19th-century America and a preeminent figure in American art. When Winslow Homer sailed to England in March of , he was already well established as a leading member of his generation of American artists. Critics often referred to him as the "most American of American artists," combining praise with the implication that his work was provincial.
